Wan-Bissaka and Casemiro cleared the danger.

Wan-Bissaka claimed an assist on his return to the United line-up at home for the first time since the goalless draw with Watford on February 26 in the absence of the injured Diogo Dalot.

Injury and illness has reduced Wan-Bissaka, 25, to only seven squad appearances all season and he had made one substitute appearance prior to his start in the League Cup win over Burnley.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: it's clear he has a future," Ten Hag stressed. "He had some good years here at Man United, but from the start this season he had a lot of illnesses and injuries, so running behind.

"From the restart on he is fit and he could train with the team and you see him progressing, his fitness levels getting better, his performance levels getting better and I'm really happy today with his performance.

"He gave an assist - especially the way he gave the assist - about his movement in the right moment and timing, and of course a great pass by Bruno [Fernandes], but the assist is great. I'm happy with his performance. He did good."

West Ham United are interested in signing Wan-Bissaka on loan in the January transfer window and he was informed before the end of last season he was free to leave United if they received an acceptable offer.

United captain Harry Maguire was due to start alongside Victor Lindelof at centre half but withdrew from the squad due to illness and Ten Hag is unsure if he will be available for the Premier League visit of Nottingham Forest on December 27.

"I can't answer because Harry is sick, ill," Ten Hag said. "I don't know how that develops. We have to wait in the coming hours and coming days and then see if he's available for Forest."
